Our environment is what molds us and defines how we think about the world. It is something that plays a major role in whether we are truly successful in life, or whether we are being held back from achieving our full potential.
The people you associate yourself with and the conversations you have will have a huge impact on your own thinking and actions. Not only this, but every small detail of your life will shape your actions and behaviors. What you read, what you listen to, the media you’re exposed to, the Facebook and Instagram accounts you follow, the YouTube videos you watch. This will all have a profound influence on how you live your life.
If you’re having an issue with the way that you look, the way you feel, the relationships that you have, the foods you eat, then ask yourself is there something you can change within your environment that will help empower you to move forward.
Change your environment, change your life!
You have the power to be whoever you want to be. Regardless of where you’re from, what your background is or who your parents are.
It’s easy to blame our situation and circumstances on external factors that we can’t control. And it’s true that some people are born into far more advantageous circumstances than others. But there is no such thing as a lack of resources, just a lack of resourcefulness.
We are shaped by what has happened to us. Past experiences, events, traumas etc. But that doesn’t mean we have to let it determine our future. Our future is truly in our own hands.
Take a moment to think about your current and past environments and ask yourself some hard questions:
- What environment are you currently in?
- What is good about it?
- What is bad about it?
- Is it serving your goals and ambitions?
- What would be your ideal environment?
- How do you get there?
- What obstacles are in the way?
- How would you overcome them?
Use these questions to help you think about where you currently are in your life and to visualize how a more positive environment might look and the impact it could have on your life.
Surrounding yourself with the right people
It is said that you become the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with. And it’s no surprise that the people we surround ourselves with will have the biggest influence on our behavior, attitudes and results. They affect the way we think, act and feel on a daily basis.
If you choose to surround yourself with negative people, chances are you will develop a negative and disempowering attitude also. If you choose to surround yourself with people who work hard and are high achievers, then you will be far more likely to develop a strong work ethic yourself.
You have a much greater chance of success in anything in life when you surround yourself in a supportive network of positive people who will empower you and lift you up.
Take some time to make a list of the 5 people you spend most time with and ask yourself some brutal questions:
- Do they place value on you as a person?
- Do they bring out the best in you and your talents?
- Do they challenge you to become better?
- Do they give you energy, or take it from you?
- Do they spend more time lifting you up, or putting you down?
These questions might be pretty harsh, and for many you might not like the answers. But if the closest people to you are people that are preventing you from moving forward and living the life you want to live, then you owe it to yourself to distance yourself from them and develop new relationships with people who will be more supportive towards you and drive you towards achieving your goals and your vision of success.
Don’t let your environment kill your dreams, don’t let the people around you prevent you from being successful and don’t live your life on someone else’s terms.
